This kit is designed to help students and instructors of Organic Chemistry. The kits consist of metal clusters representing atoms and colored tubing representing the bonds that interconnect them. Using the tubing and clusters the atoms are assembled to construct 3 D molecules that can be viewed at any angle in the palm of your hand. The scale is 1 inch = 1 Angstrom.
The metal clusters included are sp3 (tetrahedral 4 prongs), sp2 (trigonal bipyramidal 5 prongs) and sp (octahedral 6 prongs) hybridized atoms providing for single (alkane), double (alkene) and triple (alkyne) bonds respectively. They are ideal for structural and steroisomers like E/Z, cis/trans and R/S as well as conformational analysis of organic cyclic and acyclic molecules. There are enough pieces to build several six member rings, double and triple bonds.
The kits can be safely carried in a back pack or purse to class because each case has hinges and a snap tight latch. See this products web page for photographs. We have posted several Organic Chemistry Molecular Models videos on this website and YouTube showing how to use the kit with examples of each of the topics mentioned above.

I haven't ever used another kit. I chose the orgo kit because I was introduced to these kits by my Gen chem tutor.
I love how compact and portable it is. Also, It is very easy to look at the different conformers, as the pieces are rigid enough to manipulate without destroying the structure.
My only complaints:
1. I wish the tubing came pre-cut, as in the gen chem kits
2. I wish the parts for the kits were sold in smaller quantities. I can see the utility leaving certain molecules assembled, but this leaves fewer parts available to use in structures as needs arise. It would be great to be able to order tetrahedrals in smaller quantites.

This item really helped me to understand the stereochemical aspects of different compounds. Great tool to have for Organic chem!
